The Journey Begins

I have been reading for literally as long as I can remember.  To this day, I can still remember the way I felt upon reading my first book, on my own, with nobody there to help me.  I remember being so overwhelmed with excitement and pride that I took One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish by Dr. Seuss everywhere with me.  One memory in particular stands out:  My dad was driving the car, and I was sitting in the passenger seat, holding the book up to the window because we were stopped at a light and I was using the red glow to see the page.

As I grew older, I began reading more and more.  Around the age of ten, I began "borrowing" my sister's Harlequin novels.  Once she discovered me, she introduced me to the world of YA fiction--which I devoured.  In middle school, we had a reading encouragement program:  Read a book, pass the quiz, earn points, use those points to buy things.  I had the most points in the school.  I was reading Mary Higgins Clark books and quizzing on them as often as possible.

I think I still have one of the beanie-babies I bought with my points.  The blow-up couch has long been destroyed.

It was around this time that I began writing.  My dad brought home an old computer from work and said that I could have it.  It was the most basic computer possible--really only good for solitaire and word processing.

But that was all I needed it for.

Writing started out as a way for me to create some fantasy world I wished I could live in, but slowly, it evolved into something more.  I wrote about a family winning the lottery, and about a girl who goes on vacation with her crush, and about a world of vampires and darkness.  I would spend hours sitting in front of that computer, writing about my own characters, or borrowing those I'd already become attached to elsewhere.

That was about fifteen years ago.  I've begun, and abandoned, countless amounts of stories since then.  I've written thousands upon thousands of words, and, finally, after years of encouragment from others, I've decided it's time to make a go at it.
